Membership FAQ's
Do I need to attend meetings if I become a member?

No, you are not required to attend meetings. The Medford Historical Society does not hold routine general membership meetings. Many updates are shared through our Speaker Series programs and events, which members are welcome—but not required—to attend.
What does my membership support?

Membership helps maintain Kirby’s Mill and other historic buildings, preserve the Cross Keys Schoolhouse, support restoration of the Haines–Tomlinson House, expand the Digital Archive, and present educational programs for the community.
Do I need a background in history to join?

Not at all! Members include residents, families with Medford roots, history enthusiasts, and community supporters who simply want to help preserve local history.
Are members automatically volunteers?

No. Membership and volunteering are separate. Some members choose to volunteer, but many support the Society through membership alone.
How often does the Society meet?

Trustee meetings are held every other month. General Society updates are often shared during Speaker Series programs throughout the year.
Can members become trustees?

Yes. Trustees are elected in May each year, with appointments announced in June. Members interested in serving are encouraged to speak with a current trustee or chairholder to learn more.
Where can I find upcoming programs and events?

Upcoming Speaker Series programs and events are listed on the Events page of the website.
Does membership include access to the archives?

The Digital Archive is publicly available online and continues to grow through volunteer work and community contributions. Membership helps support its expansion.
Can I donate historic materials or photographs?

Yes. Many items in our collection come from local residents. If you have materials related to Medford’s history, we welcome digital contributions while you retain possession of the originals.
Donating Physical Items
We welcome inquiries about donating books, furniture, photographs, and other historical materials related to Medford.
Because our storage space is limited and our historic buildings are carefully furnished to reflect their history, all potential donations are reviewed before acceptance. If you are interested in donating an item, please email us with:
-
A description of the item
-
The approximate size and weight (if applicable)
-
Photographs
-
The connection to Medford, NJ and/or one of our historic properties
-

Providing this information helps us determine whether the item can be incorporated into our collections or interpretive spaces.
I’m researching my family or property. Can the Society help?

We are happy to point researchers toward available resources in our Digital Archive and other materials that are currently accessible. Because the Medford Historical Society is a volunteer-run organization, we may ask non-members to consider making a small donation to support staff time and research assistance.

While we do our best to help guide visitors toward relevant sources, we are not professional genealogists, archaeologists, or academic historians (most of us). Our collections primarily reflect the general history of Medford as a community, and we may not always have materials related to specific families or properties unless those items have been donated to the Society.

Additional materials continue to be added to the Digital Archive as they are digitized by volunteers, so we encourage researchers to check back periodically.
